May 25, 2007 - NHEC Joins 25x'25 Renewable Energy Coalition
PLYMOUTH, NH – New Hampshire Electric Cooperative (NHEC) has joined 25x’25, a nationwide coalition committed to the goal of deriving 25 percent of America’s energy from renewable resources by 2025.

In supporting the 25x’25 initiative, NHEC is building on its long history of supporting socially responsible and environmentally friendly energy practices. NHEC was one of the first regional electric utilities to voluntarily support energy efficiency initiatives and initiated its first load management programs in the 1970’s.

At present, approximately five percent of the electricity NHEC purchases for use by its members is generated using renewable resources. NHEC has committed to growing the amount of renewables used to meet its members’ electric energy needs. The NHEC Board of Directors has also approved the immediate expansion of the company’s nationally-recognized existing energy efficiency and renewable energy programs to include more energy efficiency audits, additional load management controls and rebate incentives on the installation of solar hot water systems and wind-powered generators at consumers’ homes and business locations.

“We will continue to rely on energy from New England’s traditional mix of generation resources while seeking opportunities to procure energy from newer, more efficient, environmentally friendly generators,” said NHEC President/CEO Fred Anderson. “Because NHEC fully supports the principles underlying the 25x’25 initiative, we will be investing over the next two decades in renewable power sources and energy efficiency efforts that are sustainable.”

The 25x’25 initiative was launched by the Energy Future Coalition, a broad-based, nonpartisan alliance that seeks to bridge the differences among business, labor, and environmental groups and identify energy policy options with broad political support. The Coalition has been endorsed by New Hampshire Governor John Lynch and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), of which NHEC is a member. More information about the Coalition and the 25x’25 initiative are available online at www.25x25.org.

NHEC will also be conducting a public education campaign to inform its members and the public about the importance of energy conservation. As part of that outreach, NHEC will be giving away hundreds of Compact Fluorescent Lights, which use a fraction of the energy of standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer.

“We realize that in order to achieve a clean and sustainable energy future, the time to act is now,” Anderson said. “As a member-owned cooperative, we feel social and environmental responsibility is at the core of our company’s mission. We know these issues are important to our members and anticipate they will support us in this initiative.”
